How to Care for Your Cashmere

A cashmere sweater is one luxury item that's eternally in style. Regarded as the softest and warmest of yarns, cashmere has always been a coveted and highly desired material. But due to its delicate nature, properly washing and caring for your cashmere to retain its shape and luxe feel can be a challenge. Here are a few tips on how to keep your cashmere investment looking like new for years to come.

Wash:

It’s generally accepted that hand-washing is the best way to clean your cashmere.

Fill your sink, tub or basin with lukewarm water. Baby shampoo makes the perfect cleaning agent because it’s gentle enough for the delicate cashmere fibers. Alternatively you may use a very mild detergent.

Turn your cashmere garment inside out, and gently clean with the shampoo or detergent, letting the knit soak in the soapy water for a few minutes. You can also add lavender oil when washing to deter moths when stored.

Rinse the soap off but refrain from wringing the water out as this will stretch out the fibers.

Lay on a flat towel or between two towels to dry. You can steam the garment between washes to refresh.

Fold and Store:

The best option is to fold cashmere rather than hang it. Hangers can stretch out the delicate material and distort the shape. Before wearing your cashmere, you can steam it to gently remove wrinkles or folding lines.

The best way to store cashmere is in an airtight container. You can add cedar chips or store in a cedar closet to deter moths and maintain freshness.
